MGB geohazard maps and assessment reports – guide to risks for landslide and flood

The Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program is a on-going priority program of the DENR, which is being implemented by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB). Its main objective is to identify areas in the country which are susceptible or vulnerable to various geologic hazards, or geohazards, particularly flooding and rain-induced landslides.

Geohazard mapping program has three major components – rapid assessment, reproduction of geohazard maps and conduct of seminars and workshops for local government officials and schools.

Geohazard maps are digitized for printing and reproduction.  MGB in coordination with the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDDRMC) conducts seminars and workshops for local government officials and public school teachers to increase their awareness and preparedness on various natural hazards, as well as teach them on the proper use of the geohazard maps.

In Region 6, MGB has distributed the geohazard assessment reports and maps on a scale of 1:50,000 to 133 cities and municipalities.  Currently, a detailed mapping and assessment on a bigger scale of 1:10,000 is being conducted and is expected to be completed by 2014.

The team who conducts the geohazard assessment and mapping also gives an advisory to each barangay after the conduct of each assessment. In the advisory, the barangay has a brief and immediate information on the status of its area in terms of vulnerability to landslides and flooding.

In the assessment reports, risks for storm surge of coastal areas are also indicated.
