DENR, MGB-6 warns of landslides, flooding from prolonged rains

Iloilo City – As our country experiences prolonged and heavy rains, Regional Director Leo Van V. Juguan of the DENR, Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region-6 (MGB-6) once again warns of possible rain-induced landslides and flooding.

DENR, MGB-6 reiterated its advisory urging LGUs that residents living in locations previously identified as landslide- and flood-prone areas in the MGB geohazard maps must be warned and if needed, must be evacuated to safer places during occurrences of heavy and prolonged rains.

DENR, MGB-6 has distributed geologic hazard maps at a scale of 1:50,000 to all municipalities and cities in Region-6.

There is an ongoing geohazard mapping on a bigger and more detailed scale (1:10,000) which is expected to be completed in 2014. The detailed mapping identifies possible relocation and evacuation sites in each municipality.

“With the help of the geohazard map and assessment report, we know where the most vulnerable areas are. We should work together and take the precautionary measures to lessen risks most especially on human lives,” concluded Juguan. (MGB-6).
