DENR-MGB-6 issues geohazard advisory as typhoon Yolanda threatens Visayas region

Iloilo City – Regional Director Leo Van V. Juguan of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region-6 (MGB-6) issued an advisory warning local government units of possible landslides and flooding with the coming of typhoon Yolanda.Juguan advised the local government to make use of the geohazard maps showing areas in their jurisdiction that are highly at risk for landslides and flooding.

In its advisory, MGB-6 advised LGUs to take precautionary measures and if necessary, to evacuate people living in the areas prone to landslides and flooding.“We cannot overemphasize the importance of the information given in the geohazard maps and assessment that we have been distributing to the LGUs.

Together with the he Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (DRRMC), information drives have also been conducted by the national government,” Juguan said.Relocation sites are also identified in the assessment conducted by MGB-6. The geosciences bureau also issues an advisory to each barangay assessed as to their vulnerability to landslides and flooding.

MGB-6 has been geohazard mapping the count and has completed the 1:50,000 scale in 2010. Its more detailed mapping of 1:10,000 is ongoing and is expected to be completed in 2014. (laa, mgb6).
